Alpine Meadows is one of the major resorts around Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevadas. It is 13 miles south of Truckee (and Interstate 80) on Hwy 89, 6 miles north of Tahoe City and about a 4 hour drive from the Bay area.
The skiing features a largely North facing valley which keeps its snow well into June in a good year. It has extensive snow making for the bad years. Most of the skiing is in bowls with some groomed areas rather than on distinct trails. The summit area is well above the tree line. New for 1995/6 is the first 6 passenger express chairlift in California.
